Manage your social media.

A group of us Crowley Webbers recently attended the 2011 Buffalo Social Media Summit — Upwardly Mobile and Always Social: The Future of Local Business Marketing. The presentations were geared toward helping small– and medium-sized businesses drum up business and make sales. The upshot was that utilizing Facebook and other social media sites is now integral to growing your business.

Not exactly breaking news for most of us. But it is important to keep these stats in mind as you develop your marketing plan: 600 million people on the planet have Facebook accounts (149 million in the U.S.); 200 million people worldwide use Facebook Mobile on their phones or other wireless devices; and users spend an average of 55 minutes on Facebook per day.

Talk about a captive audience. When your business has a presence on Facebook (and it must have a presence on Facebook), you need to be savvy about managing your (potential) customers’ experience. First off, don’t be boring.  Second, update your status frequently — but not too frequently. And keep it relevant; nobody wants to know about your personal issues or what you had for lunch. Give people a reason to keep coming back, to share your content, and to like you. To really, really like you.

We’re thinking about how to help our clients manage their social media presence and to listen in on what others are saying about them. You need to be agile in this new social media and able to respond and change tack when necessary.

The most important thing, really, is to just start. While you don’t need to be an expert to wield this new power, it certainly helps to have one in your corner.

Now if you do need social media experts to boost your social media presence, well, just give us a call.
