Media Party math!

It’s time to party, media-style. So grab your calculators, kids – we’re going to do some Twittermath!

According to Forbes, as of January 2011, there are nearly 200 million registered Twitter accounts tweeting about 110 million tweets per day. So, what happens to them?

Well, according to Sysomos:
71% of tweets get no reaction – that’s 78,100,000 tweets that are simply ignored daily. Sort of sad, huh?

23% get an @reply – that’s 25,300,000 tweets that get at least one @reply. However, 85% of those receive just one.

The lucky remaining 6% get a retweet. And 92% of these retweets happen within the first hour. If your retweet doesn’t happen within this timeframe, it’s unlikely it will at all.

Only 1.6% of retweets happen in the second hour, and it gets infinitesimally smaller as time passes. Sigh.

So, what does this mean for your brand on Twitter? You need to have a strategic, tactical plan, along with realistic expectations. The last thing you want to do is dump more lonely tweets into cyberspace. Don’t be that guy. Twitter is not the place for a hard sell, unless you want to fall into that 71% that gets no reaction. To do it effectively, you have to make things interesting, get your timing right, and provide something of value. Hopefully, the way we just did here. Until next time, follow our party on Facebook.
